Session 2014 Session 4 - Question 3

Would you recommend this book to your colleagues?

Why or why not?

  1. I would definitely recommend this book to my colleagues. I think the scenarios give us (as teachers) insight into what the g/t students are feeling/going through. I also found the Tip Sheets to be very helpful and will definitely incorporate the tips i found most helpful.

    1. In response to Helen Roberts, July 1st, I too like the tip sheets. Fonseca did a great job of giving examples instead of reading a book for you left to figure out exactly what she was talking about. Tip sheets, Notes to Teacher, Scenarios, were all helpful in gaining new knowledge about GT students.

    2. I will use the tip sheet, notes to teacher and scenarios in the future as well. It's all part of that toolbox we discussed on an earlier question.

  2. Yes I would recommend this book because again, I don't know that many people take GT students emotional intensity when teaching them. This book provides insight into different emotions as they are intensified and how they are not able to cope with them. It is something that must be taught by teachers and parents. This book gives great strategies for some of these emotions and how to prevent explosions which in most cases occurs due to the lack of education with emotional intensities in GT students.

  3. Yes, I would recommend this book to another teacher or even a parent. I think it's very useful and provides strategies to prevent explosive emotions as well as offering choices of responses and how to question them to elicit them to become problem solvers.

    1. In response to Sarah Chu, I like the point you made about how you'd recommend this book because it provides strategies to prevent explosive emotions as well as offering choices.

  4. Yes, I would recommend this to another teacher. It is is very easy to read with scenarios and practical. There are great checklists throughout the book that are easy to use. I would also recommend this to parents of gifted students. This really opened my eyes about the social and emotional side of the gifted student & what their struggles are.

    1. In response to JChoy, July 3rd, I too like the scenarios (different situations, different outcomes according to approaches to the child) Fonseca gives you the right way to deal with these children and the wrong way. I can see myself sometimes in both approaches to students. It made me reflect on the situations I have been in where I used the wrong ways and how I will remember to do it differently.

    2. In response to jchoy, I think she identifies the main reasons this would be a great book to recommend to other teachers and to parents of GT students.

  5. I would definitely recommend this book to others, especially those that are parenting gifted children. This book was easy to read. I especially enjoyed the scenarios with the various kids. It made it easier to relate to students I have taught. The tip sheets are helpful, and the checklist summed up each section with concise notes. This book goes well with Tribes and Love and Logic. I especially loved reading about extroverts/introverts in relation to GT students. I had no idea it dealt more with what they needed to thrive. I really thought it was more about being outgoing vs. shyness. I will use many of these nuggets of wisdom in both my home life and in the classroom.

    1. I would most definitely recommend this book to others. As I was reading the book, it reminded me so much of a student that I had last year that fit so many of the descriptions of the children in the book. Parent conferences would have gone much more smoothly if I had this knowledge to share with parents. It was such an easy read and opened my eyes to many things that I need to be more sensitive about in the future.

  7. After the first chapter, I had a call in to a former parent in my 2013-14 classroom who would love this book! I, absolutely, recommend this book to other teachers (and parents). I especially appreciate the "Notes to the Teacher" sections. These helped me better understand some of my own confusion when it comes to reaching the needs of my gifted students.

    1. Agreed, oh very wise Mrs. BZStephenson, I also thought of students when reading this book. I think Ms. Fonseca has lots of experience working with g/t students.

  9. I would probably not recommend this book to colleagues but would definitely recommend it to a GT parent who struggles with emotional ups-and-downs of their child. I personally like to recommend books with a little more research-based strategies.

  10. I would for sure recommend this book to my teacher friends but I wish that the district would give each parent of a GT student this book as a welcome gift to the GT program. I think it would be so beneficial for these parents to read. I loved how the book went with Love and Logic because that is a big initiative at my school and has had such a positive influence in my classroom ans well as in my home with my own children! I am looking forward to using some of the tip sheets and some of the classroom checklists in my classroom once school begins again!

    1. Once again, I'm replying to Mrs. Rincon. We really should go to lunch! :)

I think the district giving each GT family a copy of this book is brilliant. I also think this book needs to be a repeat book study for SBISD teachers so more educators can understand its messages. Every SBISD school library should have a copy available for a resource to parents and teachers as well.

I can't wait to try some of these ideas on my students very soon.

    2. I agree with Rincon and Machen. This book would be a gift to parents of GT kids.

    3. I love this idea. Will definitely recommend this to parents of G/T kids but would love for all parents to be able to have a copy. Might even be a good "book study" to offer for G/T parents in the district.

  11. I would not only recommend this book to my colleagues, but also my siblings who are raising gifted children. I think it kind of gives a "playbook" so to speak and some great insight into the emotions of a gifted individuals. It is also easy to read and very straightforward.

    1. My sister has a gifted son who is going into 9th grade. She could write her own book on emotional intensity but I recommended it to her because I know she will appreciate every word. It can serve as affirmation that parents are doing the right things while lending some fresh tips.

    2. So true! I'm handing my copy to my sister in law! She needs to read it too!

    3. I wish this book was around for my sister when she was raising my nephew. I will definitely be recommending to anyone who has an emotionally intense gifted student or child.

  12. I totally agree with D Machen - this book should be a rec. read for all SBISD teachers. As students enter the GT program we should invite them to use this book to help them guide their GT child. The book offers many helpful hints/ideas in an easy to read fashion. I like the fact that it does not use educational lingo therefore making it a book accessible to all. Thank you C. Fonseca for a well written book to address the GT child - I have the perfect friend to recommend your book to.

  13. Yes, I would recommend this book. When I read the title I thought this is a book that will make sense. Throughout the years, I have been aware of emotional intensity of some g/t students. Now, I have a resource to use when needed. I also will recommend this book to g/t parents. There were several scenarios that reminded me of students and parents I know.

  14. I think every teacher should read this book. The notes to teachers alone is worth the investment. The tips for home is a bonus so that when crusaded parents approach and say "what am I supposed to do" the teacher will actually have a solid idea to present. This book gives teachers and parents an inside look to GT students feelings and emotions, which many people are shocked to see out of such "smart" kids.

  15. I would definitely recommend this book to my colleagues, but to parents as well. This is a fabulous resource that can be referred back to time and again. It would be a great one day presentation for those in need of renewal hours.

  16. I bought this book in May and started reading it. After the first few pages, I recommended it to a colleague. It captured my attention immediately and I knew I would enjoy reading the rest. I agree with Mrs. Demeris above as well. This is a great read for parents!! I am thinking of emailing a former parent and telling her about this book. I think it will only help her be more insightful of her children and maybe she will become less "Intense."

  17. I would recommend this book. In fact it is probably my favorite book that I have read on the topic. Fonseca does a good job in this book making it clear to the reader how the gifted child feels in certain scenarios and therefore why they are behaving in that specific scenario. That is something I haven't quite seen in other books on this topic. I have already recommended it to my sister and a friend, both parents of gifted and wonderfully challenging kids.

  19. Absolutely! I think this has been the best GT book I've read in a while! The scenarios and checklists are very helpful!

  20. Definitely. I think every GT teacher, and honestly, every parent should read this book. The scenarios really give you an insight into the different types of emotionally intense students. The tip sheets and the teacher's notes are worth it alone. SUCH great suggestions.

  22. I would recommend this book to my colleagues, but I do prefer Love and Logic because it doesn't focus entirely on GT students. I feel that nearly every technique and strategy mentioned in the book applies to all our students, not just the GT ones, yet they remain the sole focus.

  23. I would definitely recommend this book to my peers because it is an easy and fast read and it works well as a reference to use with all students. I love the notes to teacher because it supports the strategies the parents are being taught and ensuring the teachers are supporting that in the classroom. The checklist again a very helpful resource that saves me the time of finding strategies to use with students.

  24. Yes, I would suggest this book to both coworkers and parents of GT students. It provides a new perspective and the tools for implementation to help a GT child communicate their emotional needs/perspective and it provides examples of a coaching dialogue,

  25. Yes, I would recommend it to colleagues as well as parents. So many of the tips, scenarios and cases pertain to all students, not just G/T. Very good information on how to communicate with students overall.
